Six days after they were reported missing, the bodies of two seafarers were separately discovered floating off the coast Oriental Mindoro province on Friday morning, a radio report said.
Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, Oriental Mindoro provincial police director, identified the victims as Elmo Atiga and Michael Torres. The police director said over radio dzMM that Atiga was the captain of an M/V Tugboat while Torres was a crew member of the same shipping vessel. Initial reports said that the captain's corpse was seen floating off the coast of Gloria town while the body of Torres was recovered 100 meters away from the coast of Barangay (village) Pili in Pinamalayan town. Authorities said that multiple gunshot wounds were discovered on the bodies of the two victims. Earlier reports said that the two men were last seen Sunday with Police Officer (PO) 1 Rico Garcia and one Jerry Pajaminola, a supposed bodyguard of a local official there. Initial investigation showed that the victims allegedly earned the ire of the policeman who was said to have seen his girlfriend hanging out with the seafarers. Witnesses recounted how the two men were allegedly seen beating up the victims before they were dragged onto a fishing boat. Lawmen from the Oriental Mindoro Police are on a manhunt operation to arrest the two suspects, the report said. Pinamalayan is a second class municipality in the province of Oriental Mindoro with a population of 72,951 people in 14,326 households while Gloria is a fourth class municipality with a population of 38,667 people in 7,640 households
